For inserts, the cloth diaper industry typically recommends 3 full wash cycles before most inserts are expected to perform their best. This is because fabrics used to produce cloth diaper inserts may can contain natural oils that will wash away after a few wash cycles.

You can absolutely use cloth diaper inserts after just one wash, but note that they may not be their most absorbent until they've been washed a few times. Many families wash once with the expectation that the product will become more absorbent over time.
