For inserts, the cloth diaper industry typically recommends 3 wash cycles before most inserts are expected to perform their best. This is because cloth diaper inserts may can contain natural oils that will wash away after a few wash cycles.

You can absolutely use cloth diaper inserts after just one wash, but note that they may not be their most absorbent until they've been washed a few times. Many families wash once with the expectation that the product will become more absorbent over time.
